ABOUT THE FREE PROGRAM
Our Smart Soul Food pilot program in the 6th District, is championed by Councilwoman Ellen F. Robertson. SSF is a culinary education initiative empowering disadvantaged community families & seniors to prepare nutritious, meals using fresh, local ingredients. Led by our Culinary Director, Hell’s Kitchen finalist Steve Glenn, participants learn cooking techniques and explore cultural cuisines tailored to diverse dietary needs. Each class includes a food box for preparing meals at home
Six classes, once a week, participants learn essential cooking skills and techniques from our own UGK Culinary Director and Hell's Kitchen finalist, Steve Glenn. Each participant at each class gets to take home a food box with ingredients from the day’s recipe that serves up to six people. There will be 4 class session for the year, each session will concentrate on a particular demographic, for example Seniors & Families.
The program covers a range of cooking techniques, from basic knife skills to advanced methods, while emphasizing creativity and adaptability in the kitchen. Participants explore diverse cultural cuisines and dietary needs, developing skills to craft healthy, delicious dishes. The program also offers practical tips for making recipes healthier by reducing sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats.

In addition to culinary education, the Smart Soul Food program tracks participants' health outcomes, aiming to see improvements in diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Also offering resources recommended by health care experts at VCU and other medical centers. By fostering better cooking habits and nutrition choices, the program seeks to make a meaningful impact on participants' overall health and well-being.
